Kate Harper Dog Training

Qualified Dog Training and Behaviour Consultancy for Kent, East Sussex, South London and Surrey Border

Based in Tunbridge Wells, I am a leading qualified canine behaviourist for Kent but also travel to East Sussex, South London and Surrey Borders. I have 16 years of professional hands on experience working with dogs of all shapes, sizes and temperaments and am also highly academically qualified holding an honours degree in Animal Science. I have handled, trained and temperament assessed a wide range of dogs for national charities, dog wardens and private clients. I really enjoy working together with referring vets on more complex or challenging cases and have handled dogs detained under the Dangerous Dogs Act. I am known for my ability to resolve aggression, reactivity and fear related problems in a harmonious way.

This combination of extensive industry experience and a high level of academic qualification is rare in this field and it allows me to assist you in getting permanent results using holistic, reward-based techniques that anyone can use. I have a calm, flexible approach to my training of both dogs and their humans. My track record is proven and the majority of problems are resolved effectively quickly. I aim to provide a world class behaviour consultancy service in a fun, straightforward and competitively priced way.

I am also a UK Sniffer Dogs Accredited Coach and delight in providing your pet dogs with the opportunity to try their hand at being a scent detection dog. This nose work is great fun for all dogs and handlers and I am particularly excited about its potential to rehabilitate reactive and nervous dogs. I run popular half day Scent Workshops and also teach scent work on a one to one basis.

I am the proud owner of three dogs, a Rottweiler who was a registered Pets as Therapy dog but who now enjoys being a ‘flock watch’ guard dog protecting my chickens from foxes all day every day, and a Jack Russell and Chihuahua who mainly love just snoozing somewhere warm. I also enjoy horse riding and liberty training (a bit like dog agility) with my rescue horse Scamp.

Please get in touch if you would like to discuss booking a consultation, I would love to help you get on the right track with your dogs. Remember, there is no dog that cannot be trained!

The majority of cases can be resolved quickly. Many owners only require one session while more complex cases may require several follow up sessions and ongoing support. Many owners I work with are surprised by how much they can achieve in a very short space of time. Prices are for consults within 1/2 hour travel time from Tunbridge Wells, an additional travel fee may apply for other areas.

After making your booking you will be sent a questionnaire about your dog and family life. Please try to give as much details in your answers as possible. This should be sent back to me before the consultation.

I will request that all family members who have regular contact with the dog should be present at the consultation. You will find it much easier to modify your dog’s behaviour if the whole family is on board and understands what is required of them. I am always delighted to see how even very young children want to get involved in consults and seem to take in so much of what we work on.

It is also really important that your dog has seen your vet recently to rule out any medical problems that could be linked to the undesired behaviour before I come to see you.

If you are a charity looking for behavioural consultancy or temperament assessment please get in touch to talk about rate reductions. I always endeavour to make these services affordable to charities.

Choose a breeder/pick a puppy consultancy

This increasingly popular service is designed to help you get the right dog for you - after all, your new best friend will probably be with you for a decade or more! Getting a new puppy is a huge commitment and its so important that you get a happy, confident healthy dog that fits in with you and your family.

I can assist in helping you to select a breed appropriate for your lifestyle and level of experience, find a reputable breeder of health checked dogs with good temperaments and can help to choose a puppy with  the right temperament for you. It is fairly easy for me to predict a puppy's future personality as an adult dog by assessing it before you buy it.

This service exists due to popular demand as some of my behaviour clients have sought guidance after previously experiencing the pitfalls of buying unsuitable breeds or having dealings with irresponsible breeders. Please call to discuss and get a quote for this valuable service.
